1973
Land Cover / Use. The principal plains land uses are herding
and wildlife (green). In Kenya, rain fed farming began on the
slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro in the 1930s. It expanded after independence
in 1963 to the area shown. The beginnings of irrigated cultivation
are shown at Rombo and around Kimana and Isinet. |

1973
Land Cover / Use. Close up of the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro
showing existence of rain fed cultivation and irrigation at
Rombo. |
|
1984
Land Cover / Use. Note the down slope expansion of rain fed
cultivation, and particularly that of irrigated agriculture. |
|
1984 & 1994
Land Cover / Use. The irrigated area continued to expand
1984-1994. The pattern of rain fed expansion was mainly at
the edges, and some infilling. This map and that for 2000
do not show intensification in areas already cultivated. |
 |
1994 & 2000
Land Cover / Use. Down slope expansion is at the edges. Some
additional areas of irrigation are shown. Intensification
in areas previously brought under cultivation is taking place. |
